5,700 Flights Canceled Tuesday; 3 Major Airports Remain Closed
More than 5,700 flights have been canceled on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cancellations caused by the storm to 15,500, according to FlightStats.com. That surpasses the disruptions from Hurricane Irene, which caused 14,000 flight cancellations in August 2011.

The three major New York airports remained closed Tuesday morning. Airlines hope to resume service to and from New York by Wednesday afternoon. Travel experts say it could take several days, or even into next week, for passengers to be rebooked.

Airlines cancel thousands of US flights as Hurricane Sandy rolls

Airports in Philadelphia, New York and Washington and have suspended flights and it is unknown when they will resume.

"It is anticipated that when the airports eventually re-open and flights resume, there will be a backlog and delays for days to come,'' a Flight Centre spokeswoman said.

"Customers who are expected to travel in the next few days are not cancelling their flights, they are simply waiting on updates of when they can fly.

"They may have the option to change or delay their travel arrangements depending on which airline they were booked with.''

Qantas has cancelled flights QF107 from Los Angeles to New York and QF108 from New York to Los Angeles have been cancelled yesterday and today.

...At this stage Qantas services for Wednesday 31 October will operate as scheduled.

Virgin Australia will operate flight VA001 from Sydney to Los Angeles today. But all flights from Los Angeles to Boston, Washington, Philladelphia and New York are cancelled.

"The safest bet for flights to resume would be November 1, but there is still no assurance that will be running yet," a Virgin spokesperson said.

Virgin will refund the fare for all flights booked directly with Virgin America. For flights booked through a Delta code share passengers will only have to pay the fare cost difference.

For more information on flight cancellations and refunds, contact your airline.

Hurricane Sandy has caused more than 13,000 flights to be cancelled in North America since Saturday, as the slow-moving "Frankenstorm'' churned its way up the coast, whipping up strong winds, heavy rains and thick snow.

Yesterday 7,656 flights were cancelled and another 3,810 flights have been cancelled today.

Philadelphia International Airport has had the most cancellations so far, followed by Newark Liberty International Airport and La Guardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

There have also been cancellations at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, Logan International Airport in Boston and Dulles International Airport near Washington.

Several Australian tour groups are also stranded in the US.

A four-day Contiki tour that was due to start today has been cancelled, while two others are currently safe in New York.

Jess Leedham, from Adelaide was in lockdown at a hotel in Brooklyn with 52 other tourists from her tour.

"Everyone is keeping each other company, mainly playing cards and doing the typical Aussie thing of having a few drinks,'' she said.

"At the moment we seem to have missed out on much of the damage that is been seen in Manhattan - no flooding, just strong winds.

"We still have "palabra censurada" in our hotel and we have been advised that there is a backup generator in case of "palabra censurada" failure.''

Miss Leedham said she had been waiting to go to New York her entire life so she was disappointed she wouldn't get to see a lot of sights.

"`In saying that we are witnessing history!'' she said.

"Hopefully will be able to get out and do a few things before I am scheduled to fly home Friday - that's if I can leave then.''

Passengers making the long drive home

Pablo Gomez decided to drive the 1300 kilometres from New York to Chicago after his 6am Monday flight was cancelled.

"The drive is exhausting, but they said I might not get back until Thursday,'' Mr Gomez, 41, said.

Mr Gomez left on Sunday evening to avoid highway closures and the oncoming storm but didn't expect to be home until late Monday afternoon.

"The roads aren't too bad, just a lot of rain. I wouldn't have known anything was going on if it weren't for all the electricity trucks - the big ones - driving the other way.''

Airports shut, flights cancelled

Three smaller coastal airports shut down completely overnight and many others - including as far inland as Philadelphia - may as well have, as nearly every flight was cancelled.

Some 1302 flights were cancelled on Sunday as airlines prepared for the storm, according to the online aviation tracking service flightaware.com.

Another 7016 were cancelled overnight, including 1220 in Philadelphia and about 1000 at each of New York's three airports.

A further 3386 flights have already been cancelled for Tuesday and 147 on Wednesday.

"Most airlines have not begun publishing cancellations for tomorrow yet, but forecasters are expecting winds to be 45 to 60 knots Tuesday from (Washington) DC to New York, which alone will contribute to a large number of cancellations,'' Daniel Baker, chief executive of flightaware.com, said in a morning update.

Safety fears over the monster storm also caused disruption as far afield as Hong Kong and France.

The European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, Eurocontrol, said 300 of the usual 500-odd flights between Europe and the US had been cancelled, with more expected later today.

In Asia, Hong Kong's flagship carrier Cathay Pacific announced it was scrapping a total of eight direct flights between the southern Chinese city and New York on Monday and Tuesday.

Flights from India and Japan were also affected.

Subway services, buses and commuter trains were also shut down in New York, Philadelphia and Washington.

NUEVA YORK, 30 (EUROPA PRESS)

Marathon Officials Determining Storm’s Effect on Race

The marathon’s course does not pass through Lower Manhattan, which lost "palabra censurada" Monday night and experienced significant flooding.

As the region assesses widespread storm damage, organizers for the New York City Marathon began work Tuesday morning to determine how Sunday’s race might be affected by flooding and "palabra censurada" outages.

“We’re assessing today with the city what the damage was and the ability to recover as quickly as possible,” said Richard Finn, a spokesman for New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the marathon. “The New York Road Runners is moving ahead with everything we can do to be on the way to putting on a great marathon this Sunday.”

With nearly all of the city’s bridges and tunnels closed early Tuesday, and many roads still impassable, race officials had yet to determine whether any part of the 26.2-mile course was flooded. Typically, race officials drive the course several times in the days before the race to ensure that nothing is blocking the roadways, and to determine if necessary equipment, like mile markers and water stops, is in place.

The marathon’s course does not pass through Lower Manhattan, which lost "palabra censurada" Monday night and experienced significant flooding. But about half of the nearly 50,000 runners take the Staten Island Ferry, which leaves from the Battery, to get to the starting line early Sunday morning. While the ferry may resume service, subways leading to the Battery could be affected.

And while the starting line is high up on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the first leg of the course in Brooklyn curls up Fourth Avenue not far from areas that were flooded Monday night. From there, runners head north through Queens, hugging the East River and crossing over the Queensboro 59th Street Bridge.

From there, the course winds up Manhattan’s Upper East Side, through the Bronx and down into Central Park, where city officials will probably be clearing debris and fallen trees. Critically, many fans, runners and volunteers rely on New York City subways to get to the race, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has not announced when service will resume.

Race officials said they were in touch with the New York Police and Fire Departments, which have more pressing problems with hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers without "palabra censurada". The Road Runners uses its own generators to "palabra censurada" equipment at the start and finish lines, and does not have to rely on Con Edison.

Many runners will have a hard time even arriving in New York. Mary Wittenberg, chief executive of Road Runners, said in a conference call Monday that an elite runner from Italy rerouted his flight to Miami and, weather permitting, to Hartford. Kenyan runners who typically arrive on the Tuesday before the race face delays as well.

There are nearly 20,000 runners from overseas, and thousands of other runners who come from elsewhere in the United States. Before the storm, Wittenberg said, runners would have had until Oct. 31 to withdraw their entry. That deadline will be extended to Saturday, she said Monday before the storm hit. While runners will be guaranteed a spot in next year’s marathon, they will lose their entry fee from this year and have to pay a new entry fee next year.

More than 5,700 flights have been canceled on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cancellations caused by the storm to 15,500, according to FlightStats.com. Travel experts said it could take several days, or even into next week, for passengers to be rebooked.

The Road Runners are planning to use the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on the Far West Side of Manhattan starting Thursday to host an exposition where marathon entrants can register and pick up their bibs. The Javits Convention Center, though, is in a flood zone and Road Runners staff have not been able to get inside to begin setting up. With travel into New York delayed and many runners expected to show up later than anticipated, the Road Runners will keep its registration center open later than normal.

New York City Marathon organizers have had to navigate a variety of obstacles since the first race in 1970.

In 1990, organizers scrambled to cope with forecasts of humidity and feared a repeat of the “disaster of 1984” when the temperature rose to the mid-70s during the race and a man collapsed and died. In 1995, a year after one of the marathon’s hottest races, runners endured a brutally cold, wet race with the temperature only reaching 40 degrees with a fierce wind chill and a mix of rain and snow.

After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, organizers said few runners dropped out and many came to express their support for the city and the event. Organizers, though, had six weeks to prepare for that race following the attacks, as opposed to days this time.
